Fort Worth’s Environmental Initiatives: A Community Effort

Fort Worth’s Environmental Services Department is dedicated to safeguarding public health and preserving natural resources through a variety of initiatives that emphasize community involvement and sustainable practices.

Environmental Quality and Sustainability

The department’s Environmental Quality division focuses on protecting the city’s land, water, and air from pollution. This includes monitoring water quality in urban lakes, rivers, neighborhood creeks, and storm drains, as well as addressing soil and groundwater contamination issues. The division also promotes recycling and waste reduction services to minimize landfill use and encourages residents to recycle correctly to maximize effectiveness.

Keep Fort Worth Beautiful

Keep Fort Worth Beautiful (KFWB) is an award-winning affiliate of Keep America Beautiful that has served the community for over 40 years. KFWB organizes programs such as the Cowtown Great American Cleanup, the largest annual cleanup event each spring, and the Neighborhood Litter Stomp, a fall initiative to combat litter. Residents can also participate in volunteer-led cleanups by requesting free supplies to clean up litter in their neighborhoods.

Water Conservation and Quality

Recognizing the importance of water conservation, Fort Worth has implemented initiatives like the Trinity River Waterwheel and Water Goats to remove trash and debris from waterways. The city also offers educational programs on composting and water-saving techniques to promote sustainable practices among residents.

Air Quality Improvement

To address air quality concerns, Fort Worth has established programs such as Air Aware Schools, aiming to reduce air pollution and protect the health of residents, students, and visitors. The city also monitors air quality through the Ambient Air Monitoring Team, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.

Through these comprehensive initiatives, Fort Worth continues to foster a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment for all its residents.
